The inaugural concert of the 14th International K. Lipiński and H. Wieniawski Competition for Young Violinists and the 120th anniversary of the H. Wieniawski Music Society

Established in 1898, the Lublin Music Society is one of the longest-running organisations of its kind in Poland – this year marks the 120th anniversary of the institution’s activities – of great importance for the culture of the region, both during the partitions, when it was a centre for the promotion of national traditions, and after the regaining of independence. After World War II, the Society undertook the effort of rebuilding the musical life in the city. The presently operating Karol Lipiński General Primary and Secondary Music School, the Lublin Philharmonic and the Music Theatre started operations as branches of the organisation. Another important aspect is the network of clubs, which allowed for teaching music to children and youth even from the farthest and smallest corners of the Lublin region. The Society still boasts very extensive activities, such as running the Social Music School, clubs, choir, jazz ensemble, etc. The Paul Harris Music School for Handicapped Children is of particularly special nature. Among the organisation’s known and highly valued initiatives are two prestigious violin competitions addressed to young performers: the Stanisław Serwaczyński competition, on the national level, and the international, which has two patrons, Karol Lipiński and Henryk Wieniawski. In 2018, the fourteenth edition of the latter competition will take place, and its inaugural concert (which also celebrates the Society’s beautiful jubilee) promises to be very attractive, gathering an entire array of stars. Among the exquisite soloists will be Vadim Repin, a legendary Russian violinist whose performance was highly appreciated by the great Yehudi Menuchin himself. Before he became the winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań, and finally the star of leading stages, his incredible talent was recognised during the competition in Lublin, which he won at the age of eleven! The previous edition’s winner, Paloma So, will also perform, along with a great violinist and excellent teacher, Prof. Zakhar Bron, whose students included Vadim Repin, as well as stars such as Maxim Vengerov, Vadim Gluzman and many others. Currently, he is the president of the Lublin Music Society. The Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra under Marek Wroniszewski’s baton will take part in the orchestral programme of the concert, which will consist of a dazzling set of jewels of the violin repertoire.
