The 10th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors has ended.

We already know the results of the 10th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors. Marek Wroniszewski,,  assistant conductor of the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra, being named the best Polish participant of the Competition, also received Medal of Merit for Polish Music from the Association of Polish Musician Artists as well as the Tisha and Piotr Gajewski Award (given by one of the Competition jury members).

It is one of the most important and prestigious music competitions in Poland – it has always been a true forge of talents, and most of its winners have gone on to great careers in Polish and foreign ensembles.
Since 1982, the competition has been part of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, based in Geneva. The initiator and organiser of the first edition, organised in 1979 – on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Grzegorz Fitelberg – was his student, Karol Stryja. He also led the subsequent editions of the competition, until his death in 1998. The competition is intended for conductors who on the day of the inauguration of the event have not yet turned 35. Its repertoire includes works from Viennese Classicism, Romanticism and music of the 20th century, including works by Polish composers. It is held in Katowice on a five-year cycle.
The 10th Anniversary of the MKD took place on 17–26 November 2017. The artistic director was Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk (also artistic director of the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra), while the jury was composed of: Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk (Poland), Tomasz Bugaj (Poland), Mykoła Diadiura (Ukraine), Juozas Domarkas (Lithuania), Piotr Gajewski (USA), Eugeniusz Knapik (Poland), Charles Olivieri-Munroe (Canada), Jorma Panula (Finland), Marek Pijarowski (Poland), Ken Takaseki (Japan), Michael Zilm (Germany).
After the extremely interesting competition presentations, the winners were selected: The first prize went to Su-Han Yang (Taiwan), second – Bar Avni (Israel), third – Modestas Barkauskas (Lithuania). Unfortunately, participants from Poland did not achieve the podium this time, which does not mean that they were not recognised. We were particularly pleased with Marek Wroniszewski, the assistant conductor of the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra, being named the best Polish participant of the Competition. Other honours this outstanding bandleader received were the Association of Polish Musician Artists Medal of Merit for Polish Music and the Tisha and Piotr Gajewski Award (given by one of the Competition jury members).
He also received prizes in the form of invitations to lead concerts with the National Polish Radio Symphonic Orchestra in Katowice, the Henryk Mikołaj Górecki Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice, the O. Kolberg Świętokrzyska Philharmonic O. in Kielce, the W. Kilar Sinfonia Baltica Polish Philharmonic in Słupsk and the K. Namysłowski Symphonic Orchestra in Zamość. Moreover, the Bielsko Cultural Centre invited him to lead a concert during the 23rd Henryk Mikołaj Górecki Polish Composers Festival in Bielsko-Biała.
Other important accents of the competition connected with the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra were prizes awarded by its Director and the Jerzy Semkow Foundation to winners of the 2nd and 3rd prize in the Competition, in the form of an invitation to lead concerts with this ensemble, whose main task – like that of the Grzegorz Fitelberg Competition – is to discover, promote and create artistic development opportunities for young musical talents.
