The seventh and last of Grażyna Bacewicz’s violin concertos was written in 1965, eight years after the previous work, and not intended for publication by the author, the expression of a kind of crisis in light of the multitude of stylistic changes of that difficult but fruitful time for Polish music. Her comeback was accomplished with masterful style through the presentation of a brilliant work, sparkling with virtuosity and a multitude of interesting formal and sound ideas, while establishing a creative dialogue with tradition.

Partita, initially intended for violin and piano (the orchestral arrangement was created in 1988), is among the most important, truly epic works of Witold Lutosławski. In it, the composer combines innovative technical elements (e.g. his typical aleatoric technique in the even, “linking” sections of the five-part form) with sensitivity to melodic beauty, clarity of sound and construction.

The solo parts will feature a master and student – Roman Lasocki (whom we will hear in Grażyna Bacewicz’s Concerto) is one of Poland’s greatest violinists, a soloist applauded at home and abroad, as well as one of the most distinguished pedagogues in the field; he has lectured for decades at leading educational institutions and teaches many master courses. His students also include Szymon Krzeszowiec (the performer of Partita), a valued soloist and chamber music performer, first violinist of the famous Silesian Quartet for 20 years.

Mieczyslaw Karłowicz’s brilliant symphonic triptych Odwieczne pieśni (Eternal Songs, 1906), with its poetic programme signalled by its “Young Poland” titles (Pieśń o wiekuistej tęsknocie (Song of Eternal Longing), Pieśń o miłości i o śmierci (Song of Love and Death) and Pieśń o wszechbycie (Song of All-Being), is one of the prematurely deceased artist’s most personal compositional statements, a testament to the immense scale and originality of his talent.

The concert will be led by Tomasz Bugaj, a valued conductor who collaborates with leading philharmonic orchestras and musical theatres in Poland (including the Warsaw Chamber Opera, philharmonic orchestras in Bydgoszcz, Łódź and Kraków, well as the National Theatre in Warsaw) and has an exceptionally rich concert record on international stages. He is also a respected university lecturer who teaches conducting classes, including at music schools in Kraków and Warsaw. [pmac]
