CONCERT POSTPONED

The concert will feature performances by young students of secondary music schools who have already achieved many successes at prestigious contests. The opportunity to perform with a fully professional – but also still young – orchestra, composed of tertiary music school graduates, is a token of recognition for the students’ talent and hard work, but also a touchstone of their skills. It is well-worth attending this concert and supporting the best students. In the near future these musicians will probably become valued virtuosos, with invitations to perform on renown Polish and foreign stages! The very attractive and varied programme, with the use of four different solo instruments, offers additional incentive to attend the performance.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s cello Variations on a Rococo theme is an interesting example of early interest in 19th century historicism, when composers began to turn to music of the previous eras and its stylizations. The theme of the Variations comes from the composer’s own inspirations, but it was intended to imitate the simplicity and charm of music from the previous century.

The piano will be heard in I. J. Paderewski’s Fantasy, which was entitled in French Fantaisie polonaise sur des thèmes originaux in its first edition. It was composed in the summer of 1893 during one of the short periods of rest between exhausting concert tours, which the composer spent in Normandy. He dedicated this work to Duchess Rachel de Brancovan (with whom he had a discreet romance at that time…), and it premiered with great success in the autumn of that same year in Norwich, England. From then onwards it has often been included in his repertoire and it still remains one of the most popular Polish compositions for piano and orchestra.

Two brilliant concertos by Carl Maria von Weber are among the favourite repertoire works for clarinet, and the joyful, witty Rondo ending the second one is a true pearl in the repertoire for this instrument.

Toshirō Mayuzumi, a Japanese composer, nearly of the same generation as Włodzimierz Kotoński, also played a somewhat similar role on his country’s musical scene as a precursor of electronic music. His compositions include many forms and genres, which interestingly combine the achievements of the avant-garde with traditional music. His Concertino for the xylophone and orchestra demonstrates a whole range of virtuoso and expressive possibilities for this fascinating and archetypical instrument, known in different varieties in so many cultures.
