The End of the 2016/2017 Artistic Season!

Join us for our last concerts in the 2016/2017 artistic season!

The end of the 2016/2017 artistic season of the Polish Orchestra Sinfonia Iuventus is impressive and varied – during the June concerts we will present an immensely interesting Classic and Romantic programme, as well as works from the 20th, or even 21st century. Our age is represented by Dialog mit Mozart – an unusually original piece by the great Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös (tonight’s magnificent conductor Bassem Akiki devoted his doctoral thesis to Eötvös work), based on the unused sketches and excerpts of the extraordinary classic, and processed with the use of contemporary music language. The very same event will feature also one of Mozart’s last masterpieces – his stunning Clarinet concerto in the virtuoso interpretation of Krzysztof Grzybowski, who plays a rare, reconstructed instrument. And it was exactly the bass clarinet that Mozart had in mind when penning his concerto. There will also be pieces from the great repertoire of the 19th century, which traditionally forms the concert “canon”. You will have an opportunity to listen to Brahms’s dramatic and pompous Tragic overture. A great attraction will also be the rarely performed in Poland, early but mature and beautiful, Sinfonia in D minor by Richard Strauss – the later master of symphony programme music. The listeners will be taken on a journey from Scandinavia to the Arabic Orient. All thanks to the colourful suites by Edvard Grieg that were the music setting for Ibsen’s drama Peer Gynt. It tells the story of the main character’s adventures during his voyage to the south and symbols he encounters. The 20th century is also represented, although rather in terms of chronology than the “spirit”, by a splendid Flute concerto of the slightly forgotten Carl Reinecke. The piece looks very much back to the preceding century and symbolically closes the chapter of Romantic flute repertoire. It will be presented by one of the most talented (and awarded in numerous, prestigious competitions) flautists of the young generation – Marianna Żołnacz. The last concert in June will be conducted by Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk, the director of the H. M. Górecki Silesian Philharmonic, and since November 2017 – also the artistic director of the Polish Orchestra Sinfonia Iuventus.

The ensemble’s ultimate performance in this season will take place during the 13th Festival of Polish Music in Krakow, where, together with excellent soloists, they will perform programme including a very original and rarely presented cantata (or rather “lyrical scenes”, as the author named it) Widma by Stanisław Moniuszko, which is a music adaptation of Mickiewicz’s drama Dziady. Another festival concert will include two other masterpieces of Polish Neo-Romanticism: the early and full of exaltation Sinfonia in E minor “Rebirth” by Mieczysław Karłowicz and the bold Violin concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor by Henryk Wieniawski. The soloist will be the renowned German virtuoso Linus Roth who plays a priceless instrument manufactured by Stradivari.
