Sinfonia Iuventus at the Tadeusz Baird International Music Festival
On 26 September, the Polish Orchestra Sinfonia Iuventus named after Jerzy Semkow performed at the 3rd Tadeusz Baird International Music Festival in Zielona Góra, conducted by Ewa Strusińska.
The concert was devoted to film music by Polish composers of the 20th century. The programme featured works by Kazimierz Serocki for the film The Mine, Tadeusz Baird for Faktury, Henryk Czyż for Cellulose and Stanisław Skrowaczewski for Under the Phrygian Star.
The programme was particularly noteworthy because the works presented at the concert were recovered from archival sources and prepared for concert performance through a collaboration between the Zielona Góra Philharmonic and the Polish Music Information Centre (POLMIC). This allowed music originally written for the cinema to be heard again in the concert hall as an independent musical form.
The film music of Serocki, Baird, Czyż and Skrowaczewski revealed the diversity of musical languages employed by Polish composers in the second half of the 20th century – from distinctive colours and modern sonorities to expansive symphonic narratives.
The concert by Sinfonia Iuventus and Ewa Strusińska was part of the 3rd edition of the festival, held from 25 to 27 September 2026. This year’s edition focused, among other themes, on the relationship between the music of Polish composers and cinema.
