The first concert in the “Two Decades of Harmony and Tradition” series presented in collaboration with the Warsaw Garrison Command Club

The evening’s programme invites the audience on a fascinating musical journey through diverse chamber music idioms—from the 18th to the 20th century—focused on instrumental color, dialogue, and refined texture.

Luigi Boccherini, an outstanding cellist and one of the leading representatives of the galant style, left behind an impressive body of chamber works in which the cello holds a particularly prominent role. His Sonata for Two Cellos will be performed in a version for viola and cello, arranged by Seweryn Kosiorowski, who also performs the viola part.

Stjepan Šulek, one of the foremost figures of 20th-century Croatian music, composed the trombone and piano sonata Vox Gabrieli (“The Voice of Gabriel”), whose programmatic title refers to the symbolism of the archangel and the trumpets of the Last Judgment, combining rhetorical intensity with clear structure and vivid dramaturgy.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s brilliant variations on the famous duet “La ci darem la mano” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni belong to a large group of works that creatively reinterpret material from this landmark opera (the theme was also taken up by, among others, Chopin).

The culmination of the evening will be Felix Mendelssohn’s String Octet, Op. 20—an early Romantic masterpiece composed when the composer was only sixteen years old. This dazzling work, rich in invention and formal perfection, expands the chamber ensemble to symphonic dimensions while retaining lightness and clarity.
