Polish Orchestra Sinfonia Iuventus invites you to an emotional and exciting evening event – it is all due to the famous opera by Giacomo Puccini – Tosca. A half-stage version of this masterpiece will be presented on 15 October 2016 in the Large Hall of the Warsaw University of Technology as part of the series “Great Music in Small Halls”.

Puccini’s work is a deeply moving story of a Roman singer Tosca and a painter Cavaradossi with a hostile and cruel villain baron Scarpia in the background.

I lived for art, I lived for love:
never did I harm a living creature!
Whatever misfortunes I encountered I sought with secret hand to succour. […]
In this hour of pain, why, why, oh Lord, why
dost Thou repay me thus?

With these words the title Roman singer expresses her mental struggle in the famous aria-prayer of the 2nd act. No wonder that every singer with the right voice dreams about playing such a full-blooded and emotion-driven character. Tosca is one of the most popular and distinctive figures in the history of opera which makes it possible to show extreme emotions on the stage: love, passion, jealousy, despair and sacrifice. Puccini has based his three-act melodramatic work on the 19th-century play La Tosca by Victorien Sardou, which was written specifically for the great actress, Sara Bernhardt. The opera had its premiere in 1900 in Rome. Today, Tosca not only belongs to the canon of the opera masterpieces that are staged in musical theatres around the world, but is also one of the most-frequently-recorded operas in the history.

Puccini’s opera directed by Tomasz Konina will feature great artists. Monika Cichocka will sing the title role. She will be accompanied by such artists as: Tomasz Kuk (Cavaradossi), Jerzy Mechliński (Scarpia), Patryk Rymanowski (Angelotti), Adam Zdunikowski (Spoletta), Mateusz Markuszewski (Sciaronne) and Grzegorz Szostak (Sacristan). The Polish Orchestra Sinfonia Iuventus and the joined forces of the choirs of the Warsaw University of Technology and Tibi Domine will be conducted by Maestro Tadeusz Kozłowski.
